Bahawalnagar is an eastern district of the old Bahawalpur princely state that shares a border with India's Rajasthan province. The district is heavily dependent on canal irrigation and the agriculture sector, with wheat, cotton, and sugarcane being its mainstay crops. Fort Abbas, Haroonabad, and Chishtian are its major towns, each served by dedicated MEPCO sub-division offices. Recent industrial growth in Haroonabad has increased electricity demand significantly.
